My flutes have mostly held up well. But some have been subjected to the daily wear and tear from being played while never being properly cared for, or subjected to accidents and such. Simple problems like loose ferrules can be solved with a little bit of superglue. Cracks can be filled or glued back together, with some sort of outside binding reinforcement with thread wrapping. One of my favorite players kept his flute functioning well with a pair of well-trimmed hose clamps. He makes some of the world's best Uilleann pipes for his day job!

If your flute has suffered greatly, realize that these items sometimes have a shelf life that has expired. You may simply look to replacing it with a used instrument if/when available or something new from the current and future crew of makers. However, do not ask me whose flutes are most like mine or better! I simply do not know and this is something I do not keep track of - or need/want to.

I wish someone would simply copy my small-handed flute designs and start making these! Carbony Flutes in Corvallis, Oregon (www.carbony.com) makes a smaller handed version of their flutes.

CARING, SERVICING AND ANSWERING FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS - A REMINDER: Meanwhile I still have a recurring nightmare where many of my clients suddenly need me to do some simple repairs or servicing on their instruments, or simply have questions (including "Do you buy your flutes back for resale?"), assuming these are warrantied for my lifetime and beyond, or that I will be around forever. Ummmm...NO. Servicing and even repairs are not that difficult. I might do a Substack post on how to do this yourself. There are also instrument techs who can perform these repairs everywhere. These days I usually do not want to respond to requests for servicing.
